Masks of sanity and reflections of the grandiose self:
relations between the false self and pathological narcissism
Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the pathological consequences of narcissism, with reference to the studies of Otto Kernberg, and to relate this disorder to the organization of the false Self, as elaborated by Winnicott. To illustrate these relationships, an analysis was made of the film “American Psycho” (2000) and a study of the character Patrick Bateman, taking into account the cultural influences of pathological narcissistic behavior. It was concluded that the structure of the false Self prevails within the etiology of pathological narcissism, vectoring subjective particularity over the acquisition of a conditioning externality that hides creative and spontaneous capacity, based on ideals of grandeur and omnipotent fantasies.
