Abstract

Forgiveness, its roots in compassion and empathy, the work it gives and the difficulties it presents, will be contemplated as an essential element for what we can, in psychoanalysis, understand as mental health. The limits of forgiveness will also be worked out: the inner limit, in the form of a merciless superego, and the outer limit, in the form of "unforgivable" acts, because they are outside the field of what can be the object of empathy.
